4 Ways to Stop Seeking Out Approval at Work - The Muse

4 Ways to Stop Seeking Out Approval at Work - The Muse 4 Ways to Stop Seeking Out Approval at Work People share an inborn drive to associate with others. We're developmentally wired to ache for incorporation. Ages prior, this was connected with our endurance; in pre-noteworthy occasions, dismissal activated dread. In the event that somebody got detached or was expelled from the gathering, their life would be in danger. Since the results of being dismissed were so extraordinary, our cerebrums and conduct adjusted to stay away from dissatisfaction from others. Truth be told, research has indicated that social dismissal enacts huge numbers of a similar mind areas engaged with physical torment, which aides clarifies why objection stings. Today, we're no longer cavern individuals going around attempting to stick supper and evade predators. Be that as it may, our abhorrence for dismissal despite everything runs profound. Some of the time, we experience difficulty believing we're effective or sufficient except if we get approval from others-and that is particularly evident at work. Notwithstanding, continually looking for endorsement in the workplace can truly wreck your expert improvement over the long haul. Be that as it may, attempting to satisfy your chief, customers, or collaborators by working extended periods or taking a stab at constant flawlessness can prompt burnout and despondency at work and in your own life. How would you know whether your craving to be a profitable, pleasing cooperative person has gone excessively far and moved into endorsement looking for an area? Do you: Change or make light of your perspective to conciliate your chief or concur with the remainder of the group in gatherings? Praise associates' work-regardless of whether you don't mean it-so they'll like you? Continuously express yes to demands for your time, regardless of whether it implies bargaining your expert limits? Neglect to make some noise on the off chance that you've been dealt with unreasonably by a colleague or chief? Become vexed or offended when somebody can't help contradicting you or intensely alters your work? In the event that any of these propensities impact you, it's an ideal opportunity to assume liability and shed your endorsement looking for ways. Here are a couple of steps you can take to arrive. Stage 1: Ask Where Your Need for Approval Comes From Much of the time, a propensity to look for endorsement at work comes from something from before. For instance, would you say you were instructed to regard authority growing up? Assuming this is the case, you may feel awkward communicating difference in work settings. Did you battle to make companions in school and build up a dread of being dismissed? This may now be driving you to do whatever if takes to feel included and preferred by your colleagues. Consider how your adolescence or early improvement might be adding to your present endorsement looking for conduct. Stage 2: Make Friends With Rejection Recollect when you neglected to meet desires or baffled somebody. Possibly your manager asked you to totally re-do a venture, or maybe you overlooked a significant cutoff time. How could you recuperate from that slip-up? What did you realize thus? Much of the time, you were presumably ready to turn the circumstance around-and it likely helped you develop as an expert. At the point when you separate it, objection is a type of criticism data you can use to improve and make your next exhibition significantly more grounded. It additionally serves to likewise re-outline dismissal as something positive. It implies you're pushing ahead and pushing limits, as opposed to simply remaining in your usual range of familiarity. Stage 3. Grasp a Growth Mindset At the point when you organize learning and steady improvement, you free yourself from requiring endorsement from others. Therapist Carol Dweck found that people who saw expertise and capacity as something to be created after some time, as opposed to natural and unchangeable, were destined to accomplish their maximum capacity. Those with this development mentality were bound to challenge themselves than those with fixed outlooks, who accepting criticism as an indication of dissatisfaction and disappointment. By understanding that there is bountiful space for development, improvement, and achievement, you can wean yourself from the consistent requirement for approval. Stage 4: Focus on the Process, Not Outcomes In case you're inclined to endorsement chasing, center around improving procedures, as opposed to accomplishing a specific result. At the point when you center too barely around one particular outcome, for example, getting an advancement or raise, you append your self-esteem to outer measures which might be outside of your control. For instance, regardless of whether you're performing great and hitting every one of your benchmarks, your organization probably won't work out quite as well and choose to put a compensation freeze into impact. While this is totally outside of your control and doesn't think about your incentive as a representative, on the off chance that you've been depending on that raise, will undoubtedly be disillusioned. In any case, on the off chance that you rather focus on a procedure that you can control, you can decrease the force that endorsement has over you. For instance, perhaps you endeavor to turn out to be increasingly sorted out, so you're viewed as progressively successful and accordingly, all the more meriting an advancement. By the day's end, the main individual you have to reply to is yourself. Your own self-endorsement is an essential part of your respectability and will keep you upbeat and satisfied over the long haul. By attempting to liberate yourself from endorsement looking for practices at work, you're regarding yourself and your needs-and setting yourself up for long haul satisfaction.

The tie basically no longer passes on the impression of power and decency it once did. Force, all things considered, ought to have the option to wear anything you desire, as opposed to idiotically buying in to a custom of business clothing we Australians acquired from an a lot cooler atmosphere. What other thing of garments is as evidently pointless as the tie. A belt keeps your jeans up; a cap keeps the sun off your head and a scarf assists with keeping you warm however in the event that people were ever visited by extraterrestrial knowledge, marry have a truly diff icult time clarifying the capacity of a tie. Uh, its a piece of texture that well, it dangles from your neckline and well, um, . Whats the point? It would be very advantageous on the off chance that it bent over as a kiddie apron or hanky however grown-up men wearing tuckers may not get on with the overall population. Also, talking about things getting on, is there some other style embellishment that appears to be explicitly intended for inadvertent strangulation? Without a doubt, you can fix the top catch of your shirt (you rebel, you), however it won't help when your tie gets trapped in the modern quality paper shredder. Without a doubt, this is an outrageous case yet theres as yet something only a touch of alarming about deliberate vascular tightening. The day by day custom of hitching something around your own neck has terrible noose-like meanings (however relying upon how you feel about your activity, this may have some legitimacy). State what you will about that other darling Fathers Day blessing, the modest pair of socks, however theyre obviously the better choice. They keep your feet spotless, warm and agreeable, ease abrading and prevent your tennis shoes from smelling profusely. So this Fathers Day, jettison the tie and go for socks. Why self-confidence is a key skill when working in the Corona era - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Viewpoint careers advice blog

Why self-confidence is a key skill when working in the Corona era - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Most of us, at some stage or another question ourselves. We question our abilities, our skill, our judgement. We worry that we’re not good enough. We listen to the self-deprecating thoughts buzzing around in our minds, and we take those thoughts to heart. After all, we’re all human and all of us experience a dent to our self-confidence at some stage or another, some more regularly than others. But, as we emerge into a completely new era of work, do the current changes risk limiting our self-confidence even further? A nuanced skillset is needed to work well from home The world has been shaken by the biggest crisis of a generation, and we all pressed pause on daily life. Since the pandemic began, it’s likely that negative feelings have become more frequent for you â€" particularly if you’ve been thrown the additional challenge of working from home, full time, for the first time in your professional career, or if you were placed on furlough leave. Our daily working lives became almost unrecognisable from what they once were, pre-crisis â€" and some things may have changed forever, such as our key priorities or the way we communicate with our colleagues. Everything has completely turned on its head â€" and that can be extremely unsettling â€" possibly a little unnerving at times. A new ‘hybrid’ working world â€" in which employees that may have once worked all together, now work different hours and/or from different locations â€" also requires a slightly nuanced skillset in order to be successful. To work well in a ‘hybrid’ team, you’ll need the following soft skills, among others: Collaboration and communication Adaptability and an agile way of working Self-motivation and self-discipline Time management and punctuality Six tasks which will test your self-confidence in this new era of work Of course, there are many soft skills missing from the brief list above, but one key skill which is sometimes over-looked in this context is the need to be self-confident â€" the need to have faith in your own abilities, skills and judgement. I can’t think of an event in recent history that has sparked so much change in such a short period of time. Much of that change has impacted the daily working lives of many of us â€" the tasks we’re responsible for, the way we communicate, when we work and where we work from. There are so many new changes to digest and new ways of working to learn, that building our self-confidence is key if we are to adapt to these quickly and be successful in this new era. We’ll explore how we can all boost our self-confidence in a moment. But first, let’s take a look at the areas in which a lack of self-confidence could prove to be a barrier when working during this challenging time: Getting to grips with new technological tools that you might not have used before Presenting your work via a virtual meeting Maintaining a good relationship with your manager and colleagues remotely or whilst social distancing  Raising any challenges you’re facing in terms of your wellbeing, mental health or workload with your manager, perhaps remotely Crafting your role to support changed or new objectives, or to better support other teams or departments Setting a daily schedule that prioritises your wellbeing but keeps your productivity high How to become more self-confident when working from home Self-confidence  is  a skill. It’s something we can all master with learning, practice and persistence. Think about it â€" if you lack confidence in public speaking and make a concerted effort, your confidence will improve over time. After all, as this  Inc article  explains, “…developing skills always leads to more confidence.” So how can we train ourselves to become more confident and, in turn, optimise how well we work now? Of course, a lot of this will come from finding your feet and establishing new routines and rituals, but there are a few tricks you can try: Develop a  growth mindset, and see challenge or failure as an opportunity to learn Appreciate what you’re good at and where your unique strengths lie â€" and remind yourself of these daily Be self-aware regarding your negative self-deprecating thoughts, and keep your inner-critic in check Always set daily goals, broken down into smaller tasks, and work towards achieving these each day â€" tick them off as you go along, and consider each completed task as an accomplishment Celebrate and acknowledge any small wins or positive feedback consider creating a ‘smile file’ that you can refer to when you have a tough day, or share any successes with a colleague or friend Always be honest about how you’re feeling with your close network: they will help give you a boost when you need it Step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself from time to time â€" and acknowledge the bravery it took to do so Give yourself autonomy by setting a structure for your day, learning new skills and looking after your wellbeing When working to build your self-confidence, remember, what you’re doing is perfecting a skill â€" the more you practice these habits, the more self-confident you’ll become. It’s that simple. In this new world of work that we all find ourselves in, we are faced with a whole host of fresh challenges. And, as with any other challenge that we’ve faced before, a degree of self-confidence is needed to overcome and master. Building self-confidence isn’t easy, but it can be done with practice, patience and persistence. So, I hope you’ve found these simple steps useful in helping you silence your inner-critic and find the confidence you need to work well remotely, now and in the future. Resume Preferences Straight From the Mouths of Recruiters

Resume Preferences Straight From the Mouths of Recruiters A week ago when I was in Annapolis at the NRWA meeting, I tuned in to a board conversation with five spotters speaking to the corporate, not-for-benefit, and government segments who shared their inclinations in regards to resumes. Their inclinations are reliable with those of different scouts I converse with. Here are the key takeaways:1. Incorporate the two months and long stretches of work for any places that you held for under 2 years. 2. Use bulleted records to show achievements as opposed to blocky passages of text. 3. Make a short passage under each employment title to clarify the position duties. 4. On the off chance that posting different jobs in a single organization, just rundown the organization name and full business dates once and list the individual position titles underneath. 5. Incorporate implanted connections, for example, LinkedIn url or different connections if applicable. 6. Hold the resume to a couple of pages except if going after a government position where a more extended resume might be required. 7. Clarify any business holes on the resume. 8. Glue your introductory letter into the body of the email instead of as a different connection. 9. Ensure all organization names, work titles, and watchwords are anything but difficult to spot on a snappy output. 10. Utilize a sequential organization at whatever point conceivable; elective arrangements can raise doubt with certain enrollment specialists.

Questions to Ask an Interviewer [+15 Examples]

Inquiries to Pose to an Interviewer [+15 Examples] Inquiries to Pose to an Interviewer Inquiries to Pose to An Interviewer My first expert prospective employee meeting was the point at which I was 18 years of age. As a first-year business understudy, I needed to pick up experience working in an office situation, so I attempted to find an administrator line of work in a protection firm.Heading into the meeting, I was stressed over my absence of pertinent experience. In any case, as the meeting wore on, I fabricated a persuading case for how the abilities I had increased through school and working in a client assistance job made me a fit for the position. After around 30 minutes we arrived at the finish of their inquiry line. The questioners rearranged their papers before them, and one of them stated, Is there anything you'd prefer to ask us?Top Inquiries to Ask An InterviewerHave I responded to every one of your inquiries, or is there something you'd like me to clarify?Do you have any delays about my qualifications? What do you like most about working here? What new aptitu des would i be able to plan to learn here? What is the following stage in the process?Who would I be working nearest with, or answering to, on a day by day basis?Beyond a portion of the hard abilities we've examined, which delicate aptitudes would be generally useful in this position? Can you let me know whether I would find the opportunity to be associated with this (venture/activity/etc.)?I knew enough not to ask what pay they were advertising. It didn't make a difference to me since my essential objective was to increase some pertinent business experience. But I hadn't really thought about to what I needed to gain from the gathering. Wasn't the reason for them to talk with me?So I reacted with something like Uhhh… not really.I didn't get the job. Now, I can't state without a doubt that it was my absence of wise inquiries that kept me from landing the position. Be that as it may, I'm certain it didn't help. Many years after the fact, I've gotten the opportunity to meet for a few posi tions, and I have been on the contrary side of the table by talking up-and-comers. Through the two points of view, I've discovered that the prospective employee meeting isn't, and ought not, be uneven. It's truly similar to going on a first date.Conversation Not InterviewThe motivation behind a meeting isn't just to put the up-and-comer under a microscope. Truly, the strain to perform falls inconsistent on the individual looking for work, at the same time, at last, it's an open door for the two sides to gain from each other. As an applicant, this implies you ought to be prepared to both answer questions and ask them. This may appear glaringly evident to you. Dissimilar to the 18-year-old rendition of myself, you have most likely previously met for a vocation and realize that towards the finish of the meeting you are allowed to solicit questions.Less clear are the sorts from questions you ought to inquire. Here it's essential to recollect the three objectives you ought to have for the interview:Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job and the companyPersuade the potential manager that you have what it takes and experience they seekIdentify if the activity and the association is an ideal choice for you.The questions you ask can serve each of the three objectives. Notwithstanding, I need to pressure that it's what you ask, however how and when you ask it. Be vital. In accordance with objective #1 above, you need the questioner to see you as truly inquisitive. On the off chance that you just solicit out from convention, it will show. For this explanation, go into the meeting with questions that you ought to ask and that you could inquire. The distinction being sure inquiries are setting subordinate dependent on what you've talked about all through the meeting. This is what I mean.Job Interview Questions You SHOULD Ask the Interviewer1. Have I responded to every one of your inquiries, or is there something you'd like me to clarify? Why: This ought to be the primary thi ng you ask after the questioner has finished their inquiry line. It shows the questioner that you are occupied with the discussion and that you care that you are comprehended, an indication of a decent communicator. Odds are the questioner will react with 'no,' yet on the off chance that they would like to return to something, you presently get the opportunity to fill in any holes in your past answers.2. Do you have any delays about my qualifications? Why: No, it isn't insane to cause to notice why you probably won't get the position. This inquiry is powerful, constraining the questioner to disclose to you where you stand. On the off chance that the person feels you need a specific region, you can give some consolation of your capacities, or your capacity to get new aptitudes. The inquiry additionally shows development and that you aren't reluctant to discuss your weaknesses.3. What do you like most about working here? Why: This is a chance to associate with the individuals sitting op posite you on a human level. You will give them that you are amicable, not a robot. Further, it can assist you with recognizing if the association is an ideal choice for you. Give close consideration to the individual's answer and body language.4. What new abilities would i be able to want to learn here? Why: Employers acknowledge up-and-comers who can see themselves developing with their organization. This inquiry shows that you are not kidding about self-awareness and need a workplace where you can gain from others around you.5. What is the subsequent stage in the process? Why: Timing is everything with this one. It ought to be your last inquiry since it imparts the sign that you don't' have anything further that you need to share about yourself or find out about the position/association. It's likewise an exceptionally down to earth question since you'll discover when you may hear next from them.Job Interview Questions You COULD Ask the Interviewer6. Who might I be working nearest w ith, or answering to, on a day by day basis? Why: Job fulfillment, or disappointment, has a great deal to do with the individuals you cooperate with every day. So why not get a feeling of the degree of coordinated effort and group dynamic you can anticipate from a new position? A few people work best when they are given a high level of freedom; others need their chief to sustain. This inquiry will assist you with deciding if the job coordinates your needs.7. Past a portion of the hard abilities we've talked about, which delicate aptitudes would be generally useful in this position? Why: Chances are that the set of working responsibilities that pulled in you to the position recorded all the hard aptitudes the business is looking for. Furthermore, the main part of most meetings is spent on examining these components. On the off chance that before the finish of the meeting little consideration has been paid to delicate aptitudes (flexibility, cooperation, activity, and so on.), make cert ain to bring up this issue. Once more, it will assist you with deciding the kind of character that fits best in the role.8. Would you be able to let me know whether I would find the opportunity to be engaged with this (venture/activity/etc.)?Why: The most ideal approach to show that you are truly keen on the position is to exhibit top to bottom information on the organization. In the event that you've done your examination early, you will have revealed portions of the association's business that intrigue you. Try not to be hesitant to ask whether your work will contact these regions.

How to Feel Successful Early on in Your Career- The Muse

Step by step instructions to Feel Successful Early on in Your Career-The Muse Step by step instructions to Feel Successful Early on in Your Career At the point when I began my first employment as an advanced media facilitator at a little Catholic college, the main idea I'd given to my five-year plan was the manner by which I'd clarify it in a meeting. Streak forward five years and two titles later and I had subsided into an everyday daily schedule. I wound up progressively exhausted with work I was once amped up for. As I started arranging the following stage in my vocation, I understood that for the entirety of the experience, associations, and abilities I had created up to that point, I hadn't gave close enough consideration to the 10,000 foot view of what might cause me to feel fruitful. Turns out, it isn't just about your compensation. I wasn't the only one in feeling eager right off the bat in my vocation. As per a recent report led by LinkedIn, Millennials will change employments (at least four!) times before the age of 32 (when contrasted with Gen-Xers who made two moves in that time frame). In any case, what I realized is that in the event that you simply jump into your next job, you may feel a similar anxiety. Be that as it may, on the off chance that you work at feeling effective in the activity you have, you may very well discover joy there. Furthermore, in the event that you don't? Not exclusively will you maintain a strategic distance from laments, however all that you've done to support your present experience will make you an extremely alluring activity candidate. In this way, whatever way you wind up taking, you're setting yourself up for progress. Attempt this: 1. Archive Your Wins Effective individuals complete things. Take a gander at your association's objectives and targets. How have you contributed independently or as an individual from a group to bring positive (and quantifiable) results to accomplish them? Consider where you tackled an issue, made something new, or spared assets for your organization. Be as itemized as conceivable when reporting encounters. (Reward: It just takes 15 minutes per week, and this guide will walk you through how to do it.) Recording your proudest work accomplishments pays off from numerous points of view. In the midst of self-question, they fill in as an affirmation of your capacities and a prompt infusion of certainty. During a pursuit of employment, they make significant resume visual cues, eye catching introductory letter articulations, and an extraordinary response to a portion of those bothersome social inquiries that everybody hates to reply, similar to, Inform me regarding a task you're generally pleased with. In this way, utilize your successes as a manual for continue exceeding expectations in your present job or go out and get your next one. 2. Add to Team Achievements It's so natural to get hindered in the everyday and turn out to be so centered around our own duties that we neglect to draw in with our companions in a significant way. Set aside the effort to imagine their perspective. In the event that they're battling, how might you help? Become the individual your associates search out for something you've created aptitude in. Is there something you're great at that would you be able to offer to assist them with? All the better if it's something you really appreciate! Try not to limit delicate abilities like undivided attention. You could be the go-to individual when they need somebody to skip a thought off of: It'll keep your days new, and you'll realize you had an influence in their accomplishments. Another approach to contribute is by tolerating an undertaking nobody else needs. Without a doubt, you don't need that to take up the greater part of your time, yet on the off chance that it won't disturb your present work process (for in excess of a couple of hours), exhibiting your duty to the group won't go unnoticed. It may be the case that drawing in with your group encourages you feel progressively associated with and roused by-your work. What's more, if not, you'll be cushioning your resume with instances of your heavenly work execution meanwhile. YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY STUCK IN A RUT We know specialists who have some expertise in stalling out. Converse with a Career Coach Today 3. Seek after a Personal Project Are there open doors for you to adjust your own advantages to proficient development? For example, in case you're truly intrigued by visual depiction and your organization has a visual computerization group, you could request to work with them on an innovative venture to get familiar with plan and the organization's realistic norms. On the off chance that there's no chance to apply what most interests you to a venture at your present organization, plan your own. Channel your energy for composing into an individual blog or independent composing gig. Investigate your enthusiasm for website architecture by building your own site or computerized portfolio. An individual undertaking's a generally safe approach to challenge yourself, grow new abilities, and investigate different vocations. At any rate, your own task will give you something to be glad for when your standard employment isn't fulfilling those requirements. Additionally, it can likewise lead you to another open door that you'd never at any point envisioned. (Here's a genuine story of that occurrence!) Regardless of whether you're simply feeling stuck in somewhat of a trench or really certain it's an ideal opportunity to change jobs, concentrating on your prosperity bodes well. It's far beyond congratulating yourself: It can enable you to develop where you are-or lead you to something completely new. In any case, this reflection will help direct your profession so you can like the beginning of your vocation, just as what's to come.

My B-Hive experience from creative brief to the NEC

My B-Hive experience from creative brief to the NEC This is a guest post by  Kate Watson, who graduated from Warwick this year with a degree in Theatre and Performance Studies. Kate entered the prestigious B-Hive competition and won a top placement with the NEC Group. She recounts her incredible experience here Ive always been passionate about theatre and chose my degree based on this, hoping to find an area of the arts that I could pursue as a career. After completing a marketing module and working in the marketing department of the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham, I knew this was where my future lay. Unfortunately often due to misconceptions theatre students sometimes get overlooked when it comes to business related jobs. The  B-Hive competition  was my way of proving to myself (and employers) that I was as able as any other degree student to succeed in marketing. And I did! B-Hive whats it all about? For those of you who havent heard of the B-Hive competition, its an opportunity for students from universities across the West Midlands to put their skills in marketing, PR, Advertising, Graphic Design and Web Design to the test by responding to a creative brief posted online. The judges select the best responses, inviting students to present their ideas to a panel of industry professionals; last years panel included representatives from Deloitte, NEC Group National Express. Its a great way to get your name out there and offers a fantastic (and much sought after) opportunity to gain paid work experience, with some of the Midlands biggest recruiters. Working at the NEC Group gave me invaluable experience of working for a large organisation experience that I probably wouldnt have got otherwise. The NEC Group incorporates several large venues across Birmingham, including the NEC, ICC, NIA and LG Arena, as well as ticketing agent The Ticket Factory and catering company Amadeus. Consequently, the office is a fast-paced, vibrant place to work, full of busy yet friendly staff each making a contribution to a different area of the organisation. Getting experience My main role during my time at the NEC was in digital marketing. This presented both challenge and opportunity, as it was a not an area Id previously considered working in. Amadeus had gained a large contract catering at the Olympic park during the games and consequently wanted to update their website to highlight the variety of events they cater for and services they provide. The main website template had been created and I was responsible for inputting visual elements of the website, ensuring the images used reflected the key themes and messages within the website copy. This task highlighted how important branding was to each strand of the NEC Group as each part of the organisation had to exist independently with its own key aims and messages, while existing under an umbrella organisation, the NEC Group. I think this gave me an excellent insight into marketing strategy and how to align the message and the delivery. Working in a large organisation I was introduced to the advanced and intelligent e-bulletin system the NEC Group used in order to target customers effectively with events. Due to the large variety of events taking place in each of the venues, it is important that customers are not bombarded with information about everything taking place at the venues each month. Consequently, a system is used which tailors an e-bulletin to each customers needs, advertising Justin Bieber to previous concert attenders of his or similar concerts, while promoting car shows to automotive enthusiasts. While I have used segmentation previously to understand audiences needs and wants, I have never seen it used on such a scale a direct result of working for such a large organisation with the financial resources to introduce such sophisticated technology. Looking ahead Working at the NEC Group allowed me to experience working for a large organisation. Having worked for smaller companies previously I have now had the opportunity to explore the pros and cons of each, and consider my options for the future when pursuing my career in marketing. During my placement I had an interview at the Town Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, securing a more permanent position as Marketing Assistant (maternity cover). Unfortunately this meant that I had to cut short my time with the NEC Group, but I am extremely grateful for the whole experience and know that it will continue to pay dividends in terms of the skills Ive gained and the contacts Ive made. In applying for the B-Hive competition I was determined to stretch myself and show that I could thrive in a fast-paced, commercial environment and thanks to the NEC Group, Ive done it. Future employers will now see that I am an arts graduate with creativity and business experience and I feel confident that this combinati on will help me stand out when applying for more permament roles in marketing. The final word I would certainly encourage Warwick students to apply for B-Hive. Not only will it give you fantastic experience in a creative industry environment, but potentially a great head start to your career. Submit that brief you don’t know where it might take you! * If youre tempted to have a go, check  B-Hive  for further info and  dates for your diary

5 Things to Look for in a Great Resume Template

5 Things to Look for in a Great Resume Template When they apply for a job, the majority of applicants use a template to design their resume, rather than building one from scratch. Some templates are good enough to land an excellent job because they expertly showcase your skills. But there are thousands of templates, both online and in your Word program. How do you know which to choose? The answer depends on such variables as your job type and your years of experience. Not all resume styles will match your job posting, nor will they be flexible enough to meet your needs. Despite the differences, all great resume templates have certain features. Here are some details to look for when you choose yours. 1. Flexibility There’s no such thing as “the perfect resume.” An expert can take a good template and make tweaks here and there to match his or her needs. It may require adjusting some of the formatting or inserting longer sections than the resume was designed for. This kind of flexibility allows more creativity and specificity in the text. For example, most resume experts recommend you ditch the objective statement, but templates still include one at the top of the page. When you can adjust the formatting, lead with a modern, captivating summary instead of an old-hat objective statement. 2. Design toward the job As a general rule, resumes tend to be fairly plain. Most are written with black text, 11-point Times New Roman, and very little color. This style is recommended for regular office jobs, writers, the medical professions, and many other no-frill career tracks. But that doesn’t mean a template with a little more color and character won’t perform well in the right setting. If you’re applying for a graphic design position, it’s one thing to state you’re a creative designer and another to show it with your resume. Choosing a template with a little more pizzazz for a position in the creative field could land the job for you. As you look for a resume template that will best reflect the position you’re applying for, consider using a free resume builder. These offer guidance, tips, suggested designs, online options, and more so you deliver a resume that’s best suited for the job in question. 3. Actionable guides Good templates will also guide you through the resume-building process, which is especially useful if you’re new to the process of building an effective resume. The guide will walk you through the process, with captions that tell you what to write in each provided field. It also provides a toolbar that provides tips as you go along. It might suggest quantifying a statement or using stronger verbs. It should also provide links to further resources both online and in your word processor. Not all resume templates will have this advanced feature, but those that do are incredibly handy. 4. Stand-Out features According to studies, the average job posting receives 200 applications. In order to sift through all the candidates and make a qualified hire within a reasonable time frame, the average employer allots just six seconds to scan a resume. If it stands out or seems like a viable option, the sifter put it in the “maybe” pile for a second review later on. Others get trashed. If you hope to merit further review, something on your resume has to catch the eye in those six seconds. This doesn’t necessarily mean a huge font for your name or bright-colored water in the foreground. When used in the wrong setting, such features can get your resume shredded instantly. Stand-out elements include uniquely shaped bullet points, a power-house font like Georgia for your name, maximized space, and applicable design features if you’re applying for a more creative position. 5. Formatting options In high school, you were probably taught to create your resume in reverse chronological order. You start with your career objectives, followed by your level of education. Then you list your most recent work experiences in reverse chronological order. This can be a useful format for your resume, especially if your experience correlates directly with the field you’re applying for. But it’s not the only format, and you don’t want to limit your options with a template sticks to this style. You may have work experience that’s best suited for a functional resume, which lists professional accomplishments and work experience in order of their relevance. You might also benefit from a combination of the two, which focuses on your strongest skills while promoting your most recent experience. Any template with advanced options for formatting is ideal because it will give you the necessary flexibility to format a successful resume. First 90 Days at Work Success Plan - Classy Career Girl

First 90 Days at Work Success Plan If you just got hired at your dream job, you want to make sure you have the best first 90 days as you possibly can! What you do from the first day matters most. Your new colleagues and your new boss will form opinions of you based on limited information and it’s hard to change their minds after the first impression. So here’s what you can do to shape their impressions to be the best they can be: Step 1: Build key relationships early Ask your boss, “What is critical in my job that I need to know? Invite key people in your company to lunch or coffee and pick their brains. Focus on your managers and your colleagues who are the same level as you. You will need support at all levels! Step 2: Observe the office culture Try your best to blend in and always listen before you speak. Don’t give your opinions too fast right away. Your time will come but in the beginning you want to listen as much as possible. Step 3: Do what you say you will It’s so important to start building trust from the beginning. If you show you are trustworthy you will continue to get additional responsibilities which will help you achieve your career goals. Step 4: Focus and Hustle You might not have a ton of work life balance in the beginning. You want to be that person who is willing to stay late and get in early to learn and grow and get started on the right foot. It might take you more time to do something but you want to prove you are dedicated and will get it done no matter what! You may have to get some cleaning support around the house and extra childcare or ask your husband for more help around the house for your first 90 days to get off on the very best foot possible! Step 5: Seek out a mentor Find someone who was once in your position to be your mentor. This does not have to be formal. Enlist that person’s help and offer your help in exchange! Step 6: Be proactive with your new boss It’s up to you to make this relationship work. Your boss is busy so ask him or her what is the easiest way to be contacted. Go out of your way to check in with him or her and report updates on your accomplishments and tasks. Step 7: Improve your weaknesses in your new role As you go through the first couple of weeks, you will notice that you prefer some things about your job but not everything. It’s important not to just focus on the things you are good at in the first 90 days and to work hard learning and growing your weaknesses too. Eventually you may be able to delegate those to someone else but in the beginning it is extremely important to show you are well rounded and can pick up anything you are asked to do. Later on, you can have a conversation with your boss about training someone new on the task you dislike or how you want to focus more on a certain area. That is only after you have proved yourself and they see how valuable you are to the company because you can do a lot of different things and they need you. Step 8: Try to have an early win See what project is really important to your boss or co-workers and focus hard on it to make it your early win. Make it a priority in your to-do list and do a little everyday to ensure you complete it as quickly as possible. Early wins will help you make a great impression and help you get yourself set up for future promotion, raises and of course happiness! Just follow these steps and you will be well on your way to reaching all of your career dreams and loving your career for life! How did your first 90 days go?

Avoid These 3 Resume Mistakes - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Avoid These 3 Resume Mistakes - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career According to Dictionary.com, the definition for resume is a summing up; summary; and, a brief written account of personal, educational and professional qualifications and experiences, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. With this somewhat broad definition in mind, job seekers often get consumed by understanding the details of what to do when building a career summary. However, the conundrum is that youre not sure which details to consider, and which to toss so your resume lands on the hiring managers desk. In these instances, it may in fact be best to begin with just a few rules of thumb regarding what not to do when building your new resume (versus getting bogged down in a bunch of rules). To get your resume jumpstarted, consider these three things: 1. Dont marry your resume to a template. As with anything personalized, when you put your stock in a templateâ€"mirroring format, words and content strategiesâ€"your results will look like a me-too story. A shiny, pretty, buzzword-polished resume may make your eyes light up and feel good about you initially, but over time, lackluster responses from hiring decision makers will dim that light. Instead, if you are determined to use another resume as inspiration, leave it at just that, using the other resume (or template) as a launch pad for yours. Other resumes and design strategies may serve as guides but should not be the primary premise for your unique resume story. 2. Dont make your resume all about you. The bottom line is this is YOUR story, so initially, you want to focus on what your goals and dreams are. Once you have nailed those down, however, you want to identify the types of companies and roles that will leverage your talents in a way that you can reach your destination. Uncover your target audiences needs. What types of products or services do they provide? What types of clients do they serve? What types of problems might they typically encounter? Next, weave together career stories that imply your greatness through results that benefited your future company and your future boss within that company. Make sure the results pop not only with metrics but also with your strategic thinking and solutions-building skills. Show your how and your why, and get the reader emotionally engaged to you, feeling that you understand their needs and can resolve their areas of struggle. In other words, the next boss you are appealing to must feel you are their champion, their hero who can come in and help THEM look good to their bosses and reach the next level of their career. 3. Dont worry about the rules. Read 10 articles on resumes, and you will get 10 different opinions. Some say never to exceed two pages; others instruct never to use first-person; some say never to go back further than 10 or 15 years; and some indicate that employing a chart or graph in a resume is an absolute no-no. Scrap those rules for a moment, and just begin writing, with this primary rule in mind: FOCUS. Focus on your goals wedded with your target audiences wishes. At first, you may find that a brain-dump resume unfolds, one that appears leggy and lumbering. Of course, you wont want to stop there. Instead, take a scalpel and begin editing your story down, layer by layer, until you unveil the targeted message â€" a pithy short story that draws your reader in, hungry to know more.
