Afraid of Public Speaking 7 Tips to Do It Well

Afraid of Public Speaking 7 Tips to Do It Well Afraid of Public Speaking 7 Tips to Do It Well Article by Margie WarrellMy first-ever speaking engagement was at my childrens kindergarten. I was so nervous my knees were shaking and my fingers fumbled through the copious notes I kept referring to. Its fair to say I was far more focused on myself - on making a good impression and not making a fool of myself - than on the people in the room. All three of them.It was a humble beginning. Since then, Ive spoken to thousands of audiences - yes, attendance has increased - and Ive gotten better. The real aha moment came one day in Columbus, Ohio, when a tech issue left me without any slide deck or speaker notes. Nervous about messing up, I went into the bathroom and said my go-to prayer Dear God, me again. Any advice? As always, a divine whisper You know your stuff, Margie. You dont need tbux notes. Just speak to serve and all will be well. And it was. In fact, it was the best presentation Id ever given. More from the heart, less from the head.Countless people have asked me for advice on how to speak with more confidence in front of otzu sichs. They often share with me stories of their utter anxiety. One man confided hed thrown up before speaking to colleagues at an annual conference. A woman shared how shed needed a mental health day to manage her anxiety after her boss asked her to lead a big sales pitch to a major client. Another said, Id just die if I had to get up and do what you did. While Im sure she knew she wouldnt actually die, her language reflects the level of fear people have about public speaking. Fear of exposure. Fear of rejection. Fear of criticism, of ridicule, of social or professional humiliation. These fears may not be rational, but they are very real and can trigger an acute sense of vulnerability.TheNo. 1 piece of advice I give to anyone who wants to speak with greater power, presence, and impact is Dont make it about you. That may sound a little too simple if your knees abflug shaking at the very thought of having to speak to even one person, but its true. When you make what you have to say about yourself, that prevents you from speaking in ways that optimize how your words land on others. Ironically, the less focused you are on serving yourself when you speak, the more you actually do.Here are the keys to finding the courage to speak in front of others in ways that earn respectand improve outcomes for everyone - which, in the end, is the primary reason to ever open your mouth1. Set Your Highest IntentionWhat comes from the heart lands on the heart. Get clear about your highest intention for the people you are speaking to and for anyone who may be indirectly impacted by what you have to say. Keep in mind, your speaking is not about proving your brilliance, winning fans, making yourself right, or making others wrong. It is about making things better. If your words are coming purely from pride, arrogance, or ego, theyll almost certainly trigger a reaction in others that wont serve your cause. While accruing raving fans may be an outcome of what you say, if that is your primary goal, then your ego will undermine your authenticity.2. Narrow Your Core MessagesKeep it simple. People can only digest so much information. What is the core message you want people to remember, and what are the main actions you want them to take? Narrow it down and dont overwhelm your audience. You dont serve anyone if people walk away from your presentation feeling like they just drank from a fire hoseIf you are using slides to illustrate your points or convey data, resist the urge to fill every bit of space with all the knowledge in your head. Youll lose attention fast. Less is more.3. Show, Dont TellA few months ago, I was introduced to a new friends husband. Straight away, he said, Oh, weve met before. Just briefly. You were the opening speaker at my companys sales conference. I remember the story you told about your brothers motorbike accident. He went on to share how that story had taught him how to reframe when things werent going to plan. The point People remember stories, not stats. If Id just talked about the science of reframing, hed have long since forgotten a key point from my talk. So share storiesof yourself or others, infusing humor where appropriate. Just make sure the stories are relevant and reinforce your core message.4. Be Humble and AuthenticBefore people decide what they think of what you have to say, they decide what they think of you. Rest assured, no one warms to someone who comes across as being full of their own brilliance. People want to know the human, not the hero. Accordingly, we connect to others far more deeply through our vulnerabilities than our victories, more through our stories of missteps and disappointments than our stories of getting the glory or nailing it the first time.Share your journey, but balance the highlights with the lowlights, the successes with the setback s, the highs with the hard work and the hustle. This doesnt negate the importance of owning your value and believing in your worth. It just means speaking with humility, curiosity, and authenticity.5. Tune Into Your IntuitionLearning to read the room takes time. You build this skill by simply becoming present, by being aware of who shares your space and putting yourself in their shoes to see and feel the world as they do. What do you sense is weighing on peoples minds? What conversations are not occurring? What emotions are people wrestling with? What unmet needs, frustrations, and fears are standing between them and the actions that would serve them?It may be just an inkling. Trust it, and then be willing to adjust what you are saying to speak to these unspoken concerns. This can transform a good speech into a brilliant one.6. Embody AuthorityYour being speaks more loudly than your words ever can. Pay attention to how you are showing up for others, to the presence you bring into th e room or onto the stage. Your physiology impacts your psychology. Are you holding yourself as someone who knows the value of what they are going to say? This isnt about puffing yourself up or putting on a mask. Its about stepping into your power to embody authenticity.Shift your posture so you are standing straight and tall. Take a few deep breaths and connect with the ground beneath your feet. Own your space and the right to be where you are. Soften your face and smile with your eyes as you make eye contact with others. Speak with a calm and self-assured tone of voice that reveals your respect for others and your sincere desire to serve. If there is something you genuinely want to say, chances are there are people who genuinely need to hear it.7. Give Yourself Permission to Get BetterSpeaking in front of audiences in a way that engages and influences is a skill. Like all skills, it can be developed and mastered with practice. Dont wait until youre 100 percent sure youre going to s peak with the power of Tony Robbins, the charisma of Bill Clinton, or the elegance of Oprah Winfrey before you open your mouth. You may be waiting your whole life. Decide instead to give yourself permission not to nail every interaction or presentation, but simply to get better at them.- Your voice matters. Your opinions count. Never doubt that, or yourself. Rather, take a deep breath, trust yourself, and open your mouth to inform, elevate, and advance. In the end, its no more or less difficult than that.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Margie Warrells four best-selling books - Find Your Courage, Stop Playing Safe, Train the Brave, and Make Your Mark - speak to her passion for emboldening people to take braver actions and make their biggest marks in work, leadership, and life. 5 questions every entrepreneur should answer before they start up

5 questions every entrepreneur should answer before they start up5 questions every entrepreneur should answer before they start upLove what you do and do what you love. Dont listen to anyone else who tells you not to do it. You do what you want, what you love. Imagination should be the center of yur life.?- ?Ray Bradbury.Every entrepreneurial and business dream has to begin somewhere, and its often in the unlikeliest of places. If youre on the road to living out your biggest goals and dreams, youll soon find that it rarely takes a linear path. Everyones journey is different, and even when we have a solid plan, we often find ourselves doing work or trying things we never would have imagined.Part of this is the simple reality that we have no control over external circumstances. When were just starting out, or even in the middle of our journey, we have the ability to influence outside factors, but we only truly control our attitude and our effort. We have the ability to always embrace p ositivity, to believe in ourselves and to hope that things will work out in our favor.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe have the ability to work hard and to keep going in the face of adversity, failure, and mistakes. Never compromise that which you can control. Always use it to your advantage. But know this?- ?despite your best intentions and best plans, you may find yourself on a course that doesnt seem to make sense at the proverbial 10-foot level. It takes time, experience and an ability to see things from a much higher-level that helps put things in perspective. It takes feedback, honest, truthful feedback, from people who care about you to help you make better sense of things. And what you do with that feedback will help determine your destiny. Its the questions you ask yourself that define success and help build your foundation for what comes next.In my work with CEOs and senior executives, Ive found one common thread?- ?successful people and high-achievers always take the time to ask themselves the philosophical questions. They dont just get on the treadmill and zulauf away without ever stopping to ask, Why am I doing what Im doing?Theyre always self-evaluating. Not driving themselves crazy. But always questioning their approach and wondering what they could do to make incremental, even minor, improvements. Here are the 5 Questions every entrepreneur and business person should ask before starting up.1. What will make me fruchtweinhappy?Isnt this always the most important question? Then why do so few people ask it of themselves? Maybe they dont know to simply look around them. Take this remarkable research fromHarvard University professor, Daniel GilbertPeople believe that the best way to predict how happy they will be in the future is to know what their future holds, but what they should really want to know is how happy those whove been to the futu re actually turned out to be.So much of what enables us to understand what will make us happy comes from empirical observation and the stories of others. We may be drawn to certain things through our intuition and curiosity, but we also want to know what others experienced on their journey and how it made them feel. Heres furthercontext from theHarvard GazettePrevious research in psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics has shown that people have difficulty predicting what they will like and how much they will like it, which leads them to make a wide variety of poor decisions.Take the time to ask yourself this question. What makes you happy? What makes people happy that you admire and respect? Find yourself a good baseline and continue asking yourself this question throughout your life, as your tastes and opinions change, and the world changes around you.2. What skills am I most drawn and attracted to?Weve heard a lot in recent times around many in-demand skills like carpe ntry and other skilled trades. What about skills like writing, communicating, marketing and a plethora of others? I implore you to determine what skills you have AND what skills youre most drawn to.Once you have your list, put together your Venn-Diagram of the two lists to see which skills form the melding of what you have and what you love. Its absolutely vital that you do this as early on in your career as possible, as it will help you get on the right track to launching the career, passion project or start-up that you really want.Take an awesome tool likeGallups StrengthFinderand discover what things youre good at, and while youre doing it balances those strengths and skills against what you love to do most. Maybe youll have an epiphany. More than likely, you wont have the information you desire overnight. But with some effort, application and deeper thought, youll keep moving toward that intersection of passion, talent, and proficiency.3. Is this something that can sustain me in thefuture?Passion helps us accelerate. We can work with the energy passion gives us and move ourselves into position while infusing our goals with vitality. Its our commitment that sustains us over time so that we steadily build the skill and competency that will ultimately bring us success. ?- ?Dr. Jennifer HowardSourceHuffPostIn other words, is this just a fleeting thought or daydream, or is this something that burns like fire inside of you that you can commit to? I start with this question around passion and enthusiasm as its imperative that you begin there. Please, please dont start with money. Dontstartwith, theres a market for this Dont start with, Ive seen other people succeed at this. Those are absolutely important observations. They are. But theyre not where you should start. When I talk about sustenance, I begin with launching a dream toward something that truly has deep, powerful meaning in your life. Something that you love, draws you in and gives you the goosebumps just thinking about it. This passion will carry you for a long period of your life, or maybe even for all of your life.It will invigorate you when you feel tired. It will vitalize you when you feel down, dejected or fearful of success and failure. When you build around your passion and make a mental and emotional commit to following through on what youve started, you begin to develop perseverance which is essential to helping you continue with your dream.4. What are all the possibilities I see branching out from this direction? Its not always how we start, but what we learn along the way and how things finish. I close with this question because its vitally important to think long game but ask behauptung early questions up-front to bolster your creative imagination and thought process. Think about the possibilities that could come from the launch of your new business, job, idea, experiment or venture. Then, reflect back on those things, and as you add on continue to expand your mind to thi nk of new possibilities. Start with a plan, too. Entrepreneurs looking to launch their dream should be especiallyencouraged by this from HBRWe found that itpays to plan. Entrepreneurs who write formal plans are 16% more likely to achieve viability than the otherwise identical non-planning entrepreneurs.Put together your plan. It will become so much easier to identify new opportunities and build powerful, synergistic relationships. Go ahead and get started. Do the work and move forward in growth to reap the results.5. Am I truly doing this for the benefit ofothers? In order for you to succeed, you must go all in with this. Otherwise, youre only in it for yourself. And that never works out well. 4 ways successful women stay energized - without coffee4 ways successful women stay energized - without coffeeFor many women, there are times when it feels like having acoffeecup permanently attached to one hand is the only way to make it through the day. Some of the worlds mostsuccessfulwomen have lauded caffeine as their saving grace- Oprah, Katie Couric and even Ariana Grande are among coffees biggest fans- and studies have shown that coffee has myriadbenefits, from helping people live longer to protecting brain health.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreYet others find caffeinated beverages to be too intense, making them overly wired or anxious, and even causing insomnia if consumed too late in the day. Even those who can tolerate caffeine may want to dial their consumption back occasionally. But for those inevitable days when a pick-me-up is required, whats a busy, on-the-go wo man to do?Here are 4 surprising - and simple - ways that successful women across various industries stay energizedwithoutcoffee.1. Getting in exerciseMy go-to energy boost is exercise. Not only does my regular practice give me energy, but when I cant focus or feel like taking a nap, I will do something physical. Sometimes its a walk, sometimes its yoga. Occasionally, I will simply abflug doing squats or pushups It is a great way to get the energy flowing and to wake up. - Andrea Travillian, lifestyle transformation coach,Aspirify. The best thing to boost my energy is exercise. I can easily feel my energy levels drop if Im not consistent with myexercise routine. I alsosleep better, which makes me feel more energized throughout the day. Sometimes, it can be hard to find themotivationto get moving, but what I love about exercising is that I always feel better afterward - both physically and mentally. - Lauren Herring, CEO,IMPACT Group. While I do love my Starbucks, I get the most en ergy after a quick workout first thing in the morning. Ill do spinning at home or hit up the Pilates studio to stretch and practice mindfulness. Exercising allows me to boost my endorphins and clear my head. I head into work in a great mood and fully energized every day thanks to early AM exercise - Deborah Sweeney, CEO,MyCorporation.com.2. Staying hydratedFirst thing in the morning, I start my day with a cup of hot water and lemon. Why I love this as a way to wake me up is that it not only gets the digestive tract up and working - our guts are a main driver for our energy and mood - but also the brightness and tartness of the flavor of the citrus wakes up the senses. - Allison Tibbs, certified personal trainer and healthy lifestyle coach,Allison Tibbs Wellness. The mid-afternoon slump usually happens if Ive not had enough water. I try for 80 ounces of water daily. And if I feel sleepy in the afternoon, I usually feel better if I drink 1-2 bottles of water. - Lisa Hugh, MSHS RD LDN, registered dietitian food sensitivity expert,Southern Maryland Dietitian.3. Listening to upbeat musicMusic increases my energy levels entirely. I compile specific playlists according to the tasks I do each day, and listen to them for a quick energy boost both in the morning and when I reach mid-afternoon slump. - Katie Derrick, senior content writer forAfrica Travel. If I am putting in a 12-hour day in my office, I put my favorite music on and I am absolutely energized. - Vanessa Valiente, personal stylist and creator ofV-Style.Turning up the music for five minutes and dancing in place makes me smile, energizes my body and immediately shifts my mood. I also use this method when I need an extra boost ofinspirationin a moments notice. - Adamaris Mendoza, licensed psychotherapist, coach, speaker and CEO of Mendoza-Carlyle Group.4. Hacking daily habitsStepping away from whatever Im doing is often better than coffee. I call it changing the channel. Sometimes we think we need caffe ine, but really were justbored, tired or burned out on an activity. Human beings need breaks and unique stimulation. When I feel fatigued, often I just need to change the channel on my day and find a new show. Just like with streaming, the old show - the activity I was working on - will be there waiting when Im ready to tackle it again. This keeps me excited and accomplishing more. - Faleena Hopkins, movie director, and romance novelist.Having never been a coffee drinker, I turn to peppermint essential oil for a daily boost of energy. It works well for me because its so convenient, inexpensive and versatile. Just one drop is all you need I love the uplifting aroma its fresh, clean and invigorating. I am on the go a lot and if I feel myself starting to drag, all I have to do is reach in my purse, grab the bottle, open it up and take a few whiffs and I am good to go for a couple of hours. Sometimes I will put a drop on a cotton ball and place in my car vent - its great for staying awake on long drives. If working from my home office, I will place a few drops in a diffuser or rub a drop on the back of my wrists or neck to keep my energy and focus up. - Jill Lebofsky, health coach, Midlife Mojo.Whether youre a coffee fanatic simply looking to change up your routine or someone who has sworn off caffeine entirely, these four simple alternatives will have you feeling energized in no time. 5 Simple Work Issues Youre Overthinking - The Muse

5 Simple Work Issues Youre Overthinking - The Muse5 Simple Work Issues Youre OverthinkingOne of my dearest friends recently faced a major work issue. Turns out shed sent classified, internal information to a client by accident. This could get me fired, she said. Fortunately, she didnt lose her job, but the mistake was significant, and it required her to have an uncomfortable if not downright unpleasant conversation with both her boss and the client. Its obvious that this wasnt a simple work issue, and needed to be handled with care. But what about all of the work problems we complicate with our messy minds? We blow things out of proportion, overthinking this or that, fretting about what this person or that thinks, rereading a chat or an emaille chain and swearing up and down that were idiots because of one, tiny, thing thats basically a non-issue.To be sure, occasionally a professional flub can lead to termination or even just a stern warning from your manager or philanthropisch reso urces departement, but the majority of everyday, common issues, interpersonal or otherwise, are ones were overthinking. Here are five common ones that dont need to be complicated1. Forgetting to Attach the AttachmentSo you said attached and forgot to attach. Its really not a big deal. Either youll catch the small error yourself and will rectify it immediately by following up with an, Oops, looks like I forgot to attach the deck or youll be notified with a gentle, Looks like the attachment never made it, message and youll proceed to attach, and all will be well. Dont overthink it.2. Missing a Team MeetingAlthough not quite mandatory, the monthly team meeting is one that youre expected to attend and contribute to. You have a stellar record and are pleased that your boss and co-workers can count on your participation, and then you have a conflict, and you realize at the last minute that you cant make it. You give your boss a couple hours notice and then stress for the rest of the week about what hes going to say to you the next time you have your one-on-one. So, you vow to write a long email later that night, explaining that it wont happen again, that youll do a better job with managing your schedule, and youre really so very sorry. First of all, dont write or send that message. Secondly, stop turning nothing into something. Get the missed info from one of your colleagues and move on. People miss meetings nobody cares all that much.3. Taking a Long LunchYour cousins in town with a jam-packed schedule, and the only time the two of you can find time to meet is during the week over lunch. While you often head out midday to run an errand or get fresh air, you dont regularly leave for more than an hour. Sushi with your cousin has you gone for 90 minutes, and by the time you plant yourself back at your desk, youre sure your boss is breathing fire over you, and youre freaking out. Look, unless you work in the kind of environment where your every move is monitored, this is really not a big deal. Really, unless your supervisor is the type to demand to know what youre up to every minute of every working hour, dont even mention it. Resume your work and act normal and natural because you are. 4. Giving Constructive FeedbackThe new person on your team is great, but shes a little green and doesnt seem to fully grasp the way your department likes to approach initial sales calls. Youve been working with her and noticing that she often fails to follow the simple order that everyone else on the team uses. So, because its part of your job, you offer her some constructive feedback. You point out what shes doing well, and you also let her know what needs work and why. You offer suggestions for how to improve, then spend the rest of day worried she must think youre awful and will probably give you the cold shoulder from here on out. No one said giving feedback would be the best part of your day, but its an expected and understood part of any job- both giving and receiving. It doesnt have to consume you if you remember its simply part of working with other people.5. Talking About Your Saturday NightIts Monday morning and youve got a full to-do list, so when you arrive at your desk, youre fully focused- until your co-worker asks you how your weekend was, and your boss gets in on the conversation, too. Before you know it, youve told them both about the party you went to on Saturday, including details about the woman you met Although they both seemed eager to hear the whole story, as soon as you open your email and turn your mind to work mode, you begin to worry that you said too much. Did they really need to know that you were ready to leave the party moments before your buddy Henry introduced you to that woman? That you spent hours talking about TV shows and that you walked her home? Cut yourself some slack. Youre a multi-dimensional person who has a life outside of the office. As long as you didnt go on and on about sex, drugs, getting near ly arrested, or throwing up in your kitchen sink, youre fine Even if you shared a little more than your boss or co-workers, the only person whos thinking anythings off is you. Seriously. Everythings OK.Whether you stress about leaving every Wednesday at 5 PM to make it to the kickboxing class you love or you get anxious about strolling in after everyone else on Friday mornings, know that the work issues youre experiencing are all in your head. Unless youre doing a crappy job and putting in zero effort, the odd email-related error or the office social gathering you bail on arent anything to get worked up over. The resulting panic is the only thing likely to complicate things.Photo of man looking worried courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.
